The Human Experience

As humans, we go through many different experiences in our lives. Some are good and fill us up with joy. Some are scary and keep us from doing things and others are just plain hard. My mom is one of the strongest women that I know. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers a few years ago and she was his caretaker through some pretty tough times. My father died on August 4, 2018, and her struggles as a caretaker were over. Death of a family member is never easy, but watching someone succumb to Alzheimers and becoming a living shell is something I can’t imagine doing. I only listened to her struggles over the phone, since I live far away, but she impressed me with her strength everyday. I wrote this poem about losing someone, before their are actually gone and being afraid of dying that way.

Leaving Before He’s Gone

The twinkle left his eye,
No longer my jolly old elf.

I wasn’t able to say good-bye
No trace left of my docile father.

The world took him away,
Before he even died.

Did he remember my name?
Or was I just a stranger?

He left this world,
Far quieter then he entered.

We will keep soldiering on,
And try not to forget.

But if my fate is the same,
Nothing can stop the blank that waits.
